Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating mint having been opened in 1899. Built of Rottnest Island limestone as a London Royal Mint branch, it produced gold and half sovereigns as the colony’s early currency. It remained under British jurisdiction until 1970 and is today fully owned by the WA Govt manufacturing most of the country’s legal tender precious metal coins as well as collectors’ items. The Mint houses the world’s largest collection of natural gold items including an 11.5 kg nugget - ‘Golden Beauty’. Visitors may mint their own coins and observe the minting process. 310 Hay St. Open (9am-4pm) weekdays & (9am-1pm) weekends. Tel (08) 9421 7425. Entry fee.
